Town Hall Meeting of the Air

A commission for Middlesbrough Art Weekender 2018, Town Hall Meeting of the Air, responded to time spent at Middlesbrough Town Hall during a two month residency and combined poetic text, live radio broadcast and scenography to explore public discourse and the architectures of democracy.

As well Middlesbrough Town Hall and Teesside Archives, Town Hall Meeting of the Air drew on early examples of audience participation in radio broadcasts and Gertrude Stein’s modernist writing.

Tess worked with artist Kate Liston to develop the scenography of the work and Tim Shaw on sound design for the event.

Development of the work included a public workshop for all ages, in which residents of Teesside were invited to make radio jingles with musician Jeremy Bradfield, build town halls out of foam and create poetic agendas for a fictional town hall meeting of the air.

Town Hall Meeting of the Air was a Middlesbrough Art Weekender and Middlesbrough Council commission. It is supported by a National Lottery Project Grant from Arts Council England.
